Program Description:

Costa Rica as a Model of Sustainability

Program Overview

If sufficient interest exists, Dr. Husic will lead a trip from March 1-11, as part of a Spring 2017 semester course.  She has been to this beautiful country numerous times.  The flora and fauna are spectacular, the people are very welcoming, and the country is a model for 21st century sustainable development practices.

  • History and culture of Costa Rica - a primer
  • An introduction to tropical ecology: the role of research and ecotourism in conservation
  • Is ecotourism a path to sustainable development?
  • Sustaining culture and indigenous knowledge and practices
  • Models of sustainable agriculture and energy production
  • Costa Rica and climate change leadership
  • Peace as a means of promoting sustainability
This trip would have a service-learning component with the Monkey Bridge Project.

Program Details

costa rica bananasProgram Dates: March 1-11, 2018 in Costa Rica, as part of a semester-long seminar-style course which will meet once per week in Spring 2018

Credit: 1 Unit; 3-4 credits for non-Moravian students

Cost:  Approximately $1250-1400 + airfare and fees, exact price TBA (includes: tuition, in-country transportation, housing, and most meals)
